At the heart of the Distrikt development, in Lisbon’s Parque das Nações, exterior spaces are conceived as extensions of architecture. Courtyards and terraces become places of permanence, encounter and pause.
The Kronos Distrikt reading bench was designed as part of this spatial system — a custom piece developed specifically for this territory, structuring space, accompanying architectural geometry and creating a continuous and fluid place to inhabit.
A bench shaped by the site

Kronos Distrikt reading bench
Installed along an irregular retaining wall, the bench unfolds as a habitable line that reveals and follows the geometry of the place. Its organic form is not decorative: it emerges directly from the spatial reading of the site and from the need to create continuity between circulation, permanence and contemplation.
The design develops as a continuous gesture, without visual interruptions, allowing the bench to function simultaneously as boundary, path and place.
Multiple ways of inhabiting

The piece integrates three modes of use within a single continuous structure:
- backrest and long-stay areas
- informal seating zones
- reclining surfaces in chaise-lounge format
Functional transitions occur fluidly, enabling multiple forms of appropriation throughout the day.
Steel as structure and expression

Manufactured in galvanized and painted steel, the bench assumes material both as structure and formal expression. Horizontal slats create a continuous, ventilated and durable skin, designed for intensive use in urban outdoor environments.
Its chromatic finish reinforces dialogue with surrounding architecture and pavements, ensuring a solid, restrained and long-lasting presence.
A collaborative design process
The Kronos Distrikt reading bench resulted from a joint development process between Kronos Homes and Floema, where design and execution evolved in parallel.
Key challenges included:
- precise definition of curvature radii
- modularization of steel sheets
- concealed fixation systems
- adaptation to on-site wall geometry
Each module was designed to integrate seamlessly into the whole, ensuring continuity, stability and installation precision.
An object that structures space

More than furniture, this piece operates as an element of spatial organization — defining areas, guiding circulation, creating moments of pause and introducing human scale within a large architectural complex.
At Distrikt, furniture becomes sensitive infrastructure: architecture within architecture.
